CONGREGATE NUTRITION PROGRAM
Each weekday a different hot lunch is served at ten locations. The lunch includes meat, fish or pasta, vegetables, bread, juice, fruit or dessert, milk, coffee or tea. All menus are approved by a qualified dietitian and are planned to provide at least one-third of the recommended daily dietary allowances set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Congregate Nutrition Program is open to all persons who are 60 years of age or older or the spouse of a person over 60, and is designed to serve seniors in Ocean County who do not eat properly for such reasons as:
-
They cannot afford to do so;
-
They lack the skills or facilities to select and prepare well-balanced meals;
-
They have difficulty getting around to shop and cook for themselves;
-
They have such feelings of loneliness and rejection that they have little desire to prepare and eat a nourishing meal alone.
Each participant has the opportunity to make a donation toward the cost of the meal. There is no required payment, but a $2.00 donation per meal is suggested. The method of payment is strictly confidential. All participant donations are put back into the Congregate Nutrition operating grant to help further the program.
